Programs

Disaster Preparedness Project:

Trained HOV volunteers conduct safety checks, develop disaster plans and create disaster starter kits we offer to seniors without cost.

“Safe at Home”:

HOV volunteers visit seniors’ homes and check for things like locks on doors, slippery floors, throw rugs and mats that need to be secured. We also check for appropriate lighting inside and out, for obstacles that need to be removed from high traffic areas, for railings and stairways in need of repair, we change batteries in radios, clocks, watches, remotes and check for overloaded circuits. This program includes a neighbor check-in program “Have a Heart”.

Assistive Devices:

The community donates wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, toilet risers, canes, etc. which are passed along to seniors in need without cost.

In–A–Pinch (IAP):

Volunteers provide same day (24–48 hr.) services for client’s immediate needs. This program doesn’t replace existing 7-day notice service, but is there when more immediate needs occur. (ex: sick pet, unforeseen medical appointment or shopping, battery or light bulb replacement, safety issues, etc.

Humane Hearts 4 Pets & Seniors:

Heart of the Valley has collaborated with the Humane Society Silicon Valley to meet the needs of our clients who have pets. Our seniors are loving owners of cats, dogs, turtles, a hamster, iguana and a snake. HOV volunteers can take clients or pick up much needed supplies and food from the Humane Society’s Pet Pantry.

Seniors in Tech (SIT):

HOV volunteers train seniors to shop, schedule medical appointments, send email to family and friends, check out their prescription medication, socialize, connect to social media, download photos from their cameras, and more on a one on one basis from the comfort of their home

Lyft with the Heart:

A concierge service for seniors who want to schedule rides with Lyft but do not have smart phones. Upon request, HOV will schedule rides or send a volunteer to help a client learn how to use their smart phones to reach Lyft and take their first ride with them if they prefer.
